Family, friends, and members of the South Los Angeles community gathered on Thursday to celebrate the life of 16-year-old Tioniteus, whose body was found by the side of the freeway on January 8. A few weeks before the celebration of Tioni’s life, LA County authorities began an investigation to search for the person involved in this horrific crime.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon said Tioni Theus was the last to be seen leaving Compton on January 7. She reportedly told her father that she would go to a party with her friend. “She was a 16-year-old child. She wasn’t a prostitute,” said community activist Nagy Ali. She said, “Her family did not fail Toni. She failed. The community could not protect her as a village.”
