Crime in New York City: Cooking altercation leads to Queens shootings, 1 dead, 1 may be injured, police say

ST. Albans, Queens (WABC) — One person was killed and another injured as police investigate Saturday night’s shooting in Queens.

Around 9:30 pm, police responded to a 911 call that someone had been shot inside a home on Pineville Lane in St Albans.

When police arrived, they found two victims who had been shot several times.

Julie P was washing the dishes when she heard the gunshot. She looked out the window and saw several people in the kitchen next to her looking down – presumably staring at one of her bodies.

“I was terrified. I was looking at them and I was afraid a bullet would fly at me. They were right in front of me,” Julie said.

Police say the two were shot multiple times inside the home, and they believe the suspect was their own uncle. Chevorne Millings, 25, has been confirmed dead. A 20-year-old woman who was shot survived.

Police said an altercation over cooking may have been the cause of the shooting.

Violence is on the rise in what appears to be a quiet residential neighborhood, neighbors say, and crime scene tapes have become all too familiar. They say they can’t help but recall another deadly shooting just a block away.

“A prison officer was shot around the corner,” Kavita Ruiz said.

Jon Jeff, 28, was killed in August 2020 after escaping from a neighborhood party. His killer is still on the run, despite a weathered poster offering a reward for arrest.

Neighbors hope the latest shooting will not go unsolved and want to feel safe again.

“I grew up in this neighborhood, so it’s just sad that this neighborhood has changed,” Lewis added.

The suspect fled the scene in a white passenger car.

Investigation is in progress.
