How do you feel when you like on social media?

Human development researchers have studied the impact of Facebook likes on self-esteem. In one study, 300 adult participants with less than 200 photo likes completed a survey of their well-being. In the second study, researchers told 100 college students to pilot a new social media site. After posting the selfie, the researchers randomly told participants that they had an average, below average, or above average number of likes.

result? In both studies, those who received or believed to receive more likes had better self-esteem. Studies have also shown that the number of likes has had a significant impact on the self-esteem of those who feel that life has little purpose. But the number of people who liked it did not affect self-esteem when people believed that they had a purpose.

What is important to you? Family, friends, education, what are your goals? Think about what makes sense in your life and what role you play in making it meaningful in the lives of others. This change in perspective shows that “likes” are only a small part of the big picture of life. Whether you like social media or not, you are important!
