7 On your side: New Jersey dry cleaners take, deposit and disappear wedding dresses for 8 brides

Fair Lawn, NJ (WABC)-More than five dozen brides in NJ say they paid hundreds of dollars to a dry cleaner to store their wedding dress, but the owner disappeared.

Ashley Vitale and Amy Swoboda say they paid a deposit to Mort Cleaners of Fair Lawn. They promised to send the flashy flock to another company for cleaning, storage and boxing, as it is still visible in the store windows.

But now the building is tightly locked and its owner can’t be found anywhere.

An eviction notice is posted on the front door, along with a handwritten note explaining that the business has gone out of business.

The memo contains a phone number to make a call, but Vitale and Swoboda say they made a detour every time they made a call.

“I received a voicemail, but the voicemail was full,” Vitale said. “The second time I called, he answered and said I had the wrong number.”

“Every time I call, I don’t get an answer,” Swoboda said.

So the bride sought help on social media and found a friend among the three more burned brides.

“I was angry. I was sad. I didn’t really know what to think or what would happen at that point,” said Joselin Totten.

Another bride, Tracy Wallis, was desperate. Her plan was to finally give her daughter her dress.

“I’ve been pregnant with a baby girl for six months, so I wanted her to use this dress because I used part of my mom’s dress for my wedding dress. I was devastated,” Wallis said. Said.

The brides called the landlord and asked them to see some of them.

“When I came in, obviously there wasn’t a wedding dress here,” Vitale said.

“What I knew was that somehow I needed to find someone to help me find my dress,” Totten said.

Nina Pineda and 7 On Your Side tracked the owner through his wife who worked at a local nail salon.

As soon as she knew what the customer was crying, she took her husband to the store.

Within hours of our phone call, a total of eight brides met the owner in Mr. Mote’s parking lot, where he finally delivered the dress.

None were cleaned, but all their dresses were back on their arms.

Mr. Moat said he was out of business due to a coronavirus pandemic.

He apologized and refunded their deposit.
