Chicago (AP) — An eight-year-old Chicago girl whose mother worked threw a mattress through a window on the third floor of her family during a fire and jumped to a safe place, fire officials said Thursday. ..
A firefighter who arrived at a burning apartment on the south side of the city just before midnight on Wednesday noticed that the girl was safe outside. According to the fire department, he was able to rescue two young children inside, including a five-year-old brother and a two-year-old boy who were prepared to chase his sister by the window.
District director Frank Beres told the Chicago Tribune that she was impressed by the girl’s quick thinking in life-threatening situations and called her thoughts “very innovative.”
“When you’re in the sympathetic and parasympathetic stages of fighting or fleeing, you’ll be amazed at what an individual can do … they’re thinking of saving themselves in some way, and obviously you’re that We have to give credit to the child who really thinks about this, “Belles said.
Police spokeswoman Kelly Bartoli explained that her neighbor was babysittering her children and said she had no accusations in dispute against her mother. But Mr. Beres said he wasn’t sure if his neighbor was in the apartment when the fire broke out.
Mr. Beres said three children were taken to Kammer Children’s Hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation and their condition was stable. He said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
