A mysterious rash can affect the feet of coronavirus patients

(NEXSTAR) – Some patients diagnosed with COVID-19 may experience the strange symptom of inflammation, such as a rash on the toes.

Colloquially called “COVID toes”, little is known about the infection and why it occurs.

According to Dawn Davis, a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, COVID’s toes mimic a well-known illness called Pernio, such as skin pain and ridges that appear after being exposed to a cold.

“COVID toes are a chilblain-like reaction that is thought to be caused by inflammation or coagulation of the superficial blood vessels of the foot, probably due to an inflammatory reaction that affects the walls of blood vessels, blood cells, or both.” Said Davis. ..

Symptoms include redness, purple discoloration, and “bleeding papules” where blood leaks into surrounding tissues. There is also the possibility of itching and burns.

Illnesses that occur in both adults and children tend to last for weeks and can be painful.

“It can be itchy and it can be painful,” Dr. Amy Parlor, chairman of the Department of Dermatology, Northwestern University School of Medicine, told WGN, an affiliate of Nexstar. “These are individuals who often have no other signs of viral infection.”

It is unclear how common COVID toes are and why it happens.

“As this progresses, we need to know more,” Paller said.

What is particularly strange about COVID toes is that they often occur weeks after the first COVID-19 exposure. It also tends to affect people who are underweight due to the lack of supporting tissue between the fingers.

Dawn says he has treated a small number of cases, but Paller says: [COVID toes] With an unprecedented number during the COVID pandemic. “

Although much is not yet understood, the toes of COVID are useful diagnostic clues, suggesting to doctors that asymptomatic patients may be infected with the virus.

“Skin is the window down,” Dawn said. “This is another clue to the diagnostic potential of COVID.”
