USGS says magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocks central Turkey

Ankara, Turkey — A 7.8-magnitude quake hit central Turkey early Monday morning, followed by another strong quake.

Information on potential damage or casualties was not immediately available.

The epicenter of the quake is about 20 miles from Gaziantep, the main city and provincial capital. It was about 16 miles from the town of Nurdagi.

Its center was 11 miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About 10 minutes later a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 rang out.
