Collier County

A teenager who spent two months in the hospital at COVID-19 is on track to give back.

Chantel Salas has overcome that possibility and now feels inspired by the people who helped her. COVID survivors plan to become nurses to help people in the way nurses helped her.

In May 2020, Chantel tested positive for COVID-19. Five days after the result, she panicked her mother and was taken to the hospital.

“Is she okay? They seemed we were trying to do our best, that’s all they can tell me,” said Chantel’s mother, Erica Saras.

Erica said she didn’t know what she could do, but pray.

“All I can do is pray for her,” Erica said.

Chantel said he didn’t remember anything since he was in the hospital.

In total, she spent 50 days fighting the virus.

At some point her lungs weren’t functioning properly, so the doctor placed her on an ECMO machine to replace the lungs and gave her time to treat the virus.

“I was scared, but she’s here through,” Erica said. “She is a blessing.”

Now mothers and daughters say their faith and the work of NCH doctors have healed Chantel.

“I’m happy she’s still here. I always talk to her, and every time I’m with her, I just hug her and it’s always emotional as those flashbacks come back “Now,” Erica said.

Chantel said the fight against COVID taught her to be more thankful for her life.

“I am always grateful for my life,” Chantel said.

Since Chantel’s recovery, the family has become more intimate than ever, including the nurses and doctors who treated Chantel. They are now considered their extended family.
