A volcano on La Palma, Spain’s Atlantic island, erupted on Sunday after a week of accumulated seismic activity, threatening lava flows to destroy isolated homes and reach the coast, evacuating thousands to authorities. I was allowed to. The new eruption continued into the night.
The Canary Islands Volcanological Institute reported the first eruption near the southern tip of the island after 3 pm. It was the last eruption seen in 1971. Along the ridge of the Kumbrevieha volcano, a huge red eruption covered with black and white smoke erupted. Scientists carefully watched the days of subsurface lava accumulation and small earthquakes.
President Victor Torres of the Canary Islands said about 5,000 people had been evacuated from their homes by 11:00 pm. According to him, most people found family and friends and took them. The rest were in shelters.
La Palma, with a population of 85,000, is one of eight volcanic islands in the Canary Islands of Spain, off the west coast of Africa. At the closest point, the islands are 100 km (60 miles) from Morocco.
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded prior to the eruption. The quake occurred in an area called Kabesadevaka on the west slope as the ridge descended toward the coast. As the eruption continued, at least two open mouths blew bright red magma into the air, which flowed in a tight stream down the mountain slopes.
Immediately after the first explosion rocked the area, a black lava flow with a burning tip immediately slipped towards the house in the village of El Paso. Mayor Sergio Rodríguez said 300 people in immediate danger had been evacuated, roads were closed and authorities urged curious people to stay away from the area.
According to local officials, the lava eventually destroyed at least eight homes and at least one chalet with a tower collapsed. Officials have warned that lava flows could threaten municipalities in El Paraiso, Alcala and the surrounding area.
Carlota Martin heard a big explosion when her family was on a farmland in Todoke, a little downhill from the eruption site.
“When I saw the pillar of smoke, I thought it wasn’t real, but I knew it would keep growing and I had to get out of it,” she told The Associated Press. “You’re leaving, but you’re looking back because you want to see what happens. No one knows how the lava flow will descend, but our plots and lots of this area. The house can get in the way. “
President Mariano Hernandez of La Palma said there were no immediate reports of casualties, but lava flows worried him “about the densely populated areas of the coast.”
“People shouldn’t be near the eruption site where lava is flowing,” Hernández said. “We have a serious problem with evacuation because the roads are clogged with people trying to get close enough to see it.”
Itahiza Dominguez, director of the Department of Seismology at the National Institute of Geology of Spain, told Canary Islands TV that it was too early to tell how long the eruption would last, but the previous “eruption in the Canary Islands was several weeks. Or it lasted for months. “
The last eruption of La Palma 50 years ago lasted for over three weeks. The last eruptions in all Canary Islands occurred underwater off the coast of El Hierro in 2011. It lasted 5 months.
“The material appears to be very fluid and the lava flow will sooner or later reach the sea,” said Vicente Soler, a volcanologist at the Spanish High Council. The Scientific Committee on the Volcanic Risk Prevention Program said parts of the island’s southwest coast are at risk of landslides and rockfalls.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has canceled his trip to New York to attend the UN General Assembly so that he can travel from mainland Spain to the Canary Islands.
“People in La Palma need to be relieved because we have all the resources we need and urgent personal stuff,” Sanchez said after meeting with local officials on the island.
