Lego plans to invest more than $ 1 billion over the next decade to build a plant near Richmond, Virginia. The 1.7 million-square-foot plant, which is set to open in 2025, will be carbon-neutral and will employ more than 1,760 people, according to Virginia officials.
The Danish toy maker, a family-owned company founded in Denmark in 1932, closed its first US factory in northern Connecticut in 2006 and moved production to Mexico. As part of the company’s latest investment, Lego said it would also expand and upgrade its facilities in Monterrey, Mexico.
“The LEGO Group’s decision to set up a US manufacturing plant in Virginia puts the global spotlight on the benefits of making the Commonwealth the premier business hub in the United States. A long-standing success with this iconic company. We look forward to the partnership, “said the Governor of Virginia. Glenn Youngkin said in his statement.
Lego officials said the new plant is part of a larger strategic plan to strengthen the company’s supply chain. The company already has major manufacturing bases in China, the Czech Republic and Hungary, and another factory under construction in Vietnam.
The Virginia facility will be LEGO’s seventh factory in the world and second in the Americas. This facility molds, processes and packs LEGO products to ensure that they meet the company’s safety and quality requirements. It will be set up in a public industrial park in Chesterfield County.
Lego officials have promised to power the Virginia plant with renewable energy generated from the on-site solar park.
“I was impressed with everything Virginia has to offer, including access to a skilled workforce, support for quality manufacturers, and excellent transportation connections,” said LEGO CEO Neil Scrischansen. Stated in a statement. “We appreciate our support for our ambition to build a carbon-neutral operating facility and build a solar park, and look forward to building a great team.”
LEGO is eligible for taxpayer-funded incentives, including a $ 56 million performance-based grant and up to $ 19 million worth of improved site development subject to legislative approval.
Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, with a temporary packaging site opening in an existing nearby building in early 2024, creating jobs for up to 500 people.
