Alaska Earthquake: A magnitude 8.2 earthquake hits the state’s coast and issues a tsunami warning

Perryville, Alaska-A tsunami clock was issued in Hawaii on Wednesday night after a major earthquake off the Alaska Peninsula.

According to the Honolulu Star Advertiser, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center described the magnitude as 8.1, saying “an investigation is underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat in Hawaii.” However, according to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit a magnitude of 8.2, 56 miles (91 km) southeast of Perryville, Alaska.

“Based on all available data, the quake could have caused a tsunami and could be devastating even in coastal areas far from the epicenter,” said PTWC.

Based on preliminary seismic data, almost everyone at the epicenter should have felt the quake widely. It may have caused mild to moderate damage.

Moderate tremors probably occurred at Perryville, Chigic Lake, and Sandpoint.

Due to the earthquake, the US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning to the area.
