Alligator attack leads to arm amputation for Florida man

(CNN) A 23-year-old man was attacked by an alligator near a pond behind a bar in southwestern Florida early Sunday morning, authorities said.

“Response personnel treated a male patient who had an amputation of his right upper limb above the elbow. Bystanders had tourniqueted the patient before we arrived,” said the Charlotte County Fire and Emergency Public Affairs Officer. ‘s Todd Dunn said in a statement.

Alligator trappers were then sent to the scene of the attack near the Banditos bar in Port Charlotte, Fla., officials said.

A 10-foot-5-inch alligator was removed from a pond and “humanely killed,” according to a statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Serious injuries from alligators are rare in the state, according to the Wildlife Service.

“Public safety is our top priority,” the agency said, warning people to avoid collisions with alligators by maintaining safe distances and swimming only in designated areas during the day.

He also said that the crocodiles should not be fed.

“When fed, alligators lose their natural vigilance and instead learn to associate humans with the availability of food. It could lead to some dangerous situations,” the official said.

Officials are also advising residents to leash pets and keep them away from water, as animals can become prey for alligators.

According to the site, the program aims to “proactively address the crocodile threat in developed areas, while at the same time protecting crocodiles in areas where they occur naturally.”

The community of Port Charlotte is located approximately 45 miles north of Fort Myers.
