A US citizen suffering from monkeypox has escaped from a hospital in a resort in Mexico and fled the country, local health officials said Wednesday.

A 48-year-old man from Texas fled last weekend from a hospital in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Medical staff The State Health Department said in a statement that he should be tested for monkeypox and quarantined.

Prior to arriving in Puerto Vallarta on May 27, he stayed in Berlin, Germany, from May 12 to 16, and then in Dallas, Texas.

During his stay in Mexico, he attended a party at the Manta Mar Beach Club in the resort town of Jalisco.

Health officials urged anyone who joined the club between May 27 and June 4 to monitor their health.

The World Health Organization said Wednesday that it knew more than 1,000 cases of monkeypox in countries where the disease was not endemic.
