Citizens can play a major role in helping scientists understand dry river networks by reporting river and stream dry events. To that end, DRYvER has created the DRYRivERS app. Citizens can use this app to map dry events. The data collected will improve the scientific prediction of future impacts of climate change in these ecosystems. In addition, DRYRivERS raises awareness of the importance of dry events in river networks.
All smartphone users who enjoy nature and the outdoors can contribute by recording the wet and the outdoors Dry state You can get links directly from the project website in streams and rivers using the DRYRivERS app available on Google Play and the App Store. The app is Open Source Easy to use. All you need to do is (1) add a location for the river location. (2) The condition within the channel, that is, whether the channel contains running water, the standing pool is cut off, or is it dry. (3) Site photo. You can use your mobile phone’s GPS to locate your location or find existing spots on the map. The app caches all the data you need when running over Wi-Fi or mobile internet, so you don’t have to worry if you don’t have network coverage when finding a dry stream. After recording a new spot, when the network connection becomes available again, simply save it and upload the information later.
All observations made by citizens using the DRYRivERS app will be published and visualized on the DRYvER website.
DRYRivERS produces the first network of real-time observations of drought events across rivers and streams. Finally, the European dry atlas River network Created including all observations from DRYRivERS and other sources. This information, in turn, helps develop models that predict the impact of climate change on streams and rivers.
