Approved development near Golden Gate Estates worries neighbors and protection activists

Collier County

New developments in southwest Florida have been approved, but many neighbors in the local community are dissatisfied with this, and environmental groups are worried about wildlife near the planned community.

Rae Ann Burton didn’t have much time to work in the garden at Golden Gate Estates’ home.

“We need to get out here and mow the bushes,” Burton said. “But I went to a meeting.”

At the County Commission’s Korea County Commission meeting, some community members are fighting the development of Longwater Village and Belmer Village.

On Tuesday, the county approved both developments.

Each development is planned for 1,000 acres. In addition to the previously approved villages, there are just under 8,000 units between them.

“Both villages provide homes for working families and local goods and services, including affordable housing,” Developer Collier Enterprises shared in a statement.

Burton is not sure.

“We don’t want to be another Miami. We don’t want to be on the outskirts of these villages,” Burton said. “We came here to escape the noise and pollution away from traffic.”

April Olson is a Senior Environmental Expert in Conservation in Southwest Florida. She called the decision disappointing.

“The proposed village does not meet the requirements of the law and will cost taxpayers in Collier County millions of dollars,” Olson said.

However, the Florida Wildlife Federation has approved that the village will be built on farmland that is rarely used by wildlife, such as the Florida Panther, and the FWF states that Collier Enterprises is following the rules of the RLSA program by protecting land. ..

Meredith Bad, FWF’s Director of Regional Policy, said: “This is important for our water resources, wildlife habitats and wildlife movements.”

Construction of the village is scheduled for 2022. Prior to construction, Collier Enterprises will work to obtain the federal, state, and county permits required for construction.
