Eyewitness News has spoken to a Holtsville business owner who has been locked out of his business Facebook account for the past two weeks.
“People may be sending me a message, and it looks like I’m not coming back to them,” said Cindy O’Campo of the CC Slumber Party.
O’Campo said her personal Facebook account was hacked on July 22nd. Her personal account is associated with her business page, which has more than 3,500 followers.
“My business page is still up and running, but I can’t make any changes to my business page because my personal account has been hacked,” she explained to Eyewitness News reporter Kristin Thorne.
Hackers seem to have set up two-factor authentication on their O’Campo account. Therefore, the 6-digit code that O’Campo needs to return to your personal account will be sent to the hacker, not the hacker.
“It’s really six digits that prevent me from running a business,” she said.
O’Campo submitted a photo of his driver’s license, passport and marriage certificate through Facebook as prescribed by Facebook if someone had trouble receiving the code.
“I have no other choice,” she said. “You can’t catch a living person on the phone.”
After submitting the document, O’Campo received a message confirming the submission, but only a few minutes later, he received an email stating that the document was invalid.
Ocampo even said he tried to advertise on Facebook, hoping that someone could call him. She couldn’t get in touch with a living person.
She estimates that she has lost 30 party reservations in the last two weeks because she couldn’t access Facebook’s business page.
Eyewitness News searched on Twitter and found many other people with the same problems as O’Campo.
One Twitter user said, “Facebook help links don’t provide help. Sending a code to a hacker’s email doesn’t help me get an account. Facebook is better! I’m fine. ! ”Is written.
Some people rely on buying a $ 300 virtual reality headset owned by Facebook just to call their Facebook customer service representative.
“I think this means more about our relationship with the company as consumers: we’re products, not real Facebook customers,” said Kunal Anand, a cybersecurity expert. Mr. says.
Anand, chief technology officer of cybersecurity firm Imperva, said that setting up two-factor authentication before hackers can protect all online accounts, including social media accounts.
“Therefore, an attacker could get your credentials and crack your username and password, but it wouldn’t pass a second check to enter that special code,” he said. rice field.
Anand said the “bad bot” was hijacking the Internet and was likely causing the problems Facebook users are experiencing.
According to Anand, 25% of all Internet traffic is related to bots, causing havoc in the accounts of people around the world.
“This is a really big problem,” he said.
