Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian season in Lent

New York (WABC)-Today is Ash Wednesday, the Christian season of Lent begins.

It’s a 40-day period of prayer, self-sacrifice, and philanthropy in preparation for Holy Week and Easter.

Cardinal Timothy Doran, Archbishop of New York, celebrates the day by distributing food outside St. Francis in the Parish of Assisi in Manhattan.

He then celebrates the Mass at the Bedford Correctional Facility and distributes ashes.
