The Yankees will use the top four healthy starting pitchers in a huge four-game series against the Red Sox starting Thursday at Fenway Park. In order of appearance, Jordan Montgomery, Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon, and Domingo German.
Manager Aaron Boone needed a starter for the home stand finale against the Phillies on Wednesday. As a result, the Yankees fell into the 32-year-old right-handed Asher Wojcies Key Triple A Scranton / Wilkes-Bar. He had a career record of 9-15 with 5.95 ERA in 57 games (34 starts) in part of the four seasons Astros, Reds and Orioles.
Wojciechowski scored 0-1, 5.68 in four Scranton games (three starts), but he has major league experience and pitched well in his recent triple A expedition (4 innings, 1 run, 7 strikeouts). ..
So he came. And when Jean Segura hit a lead-off home run to the left, his first pitch as a Yankee came out.
Wojciechowski recovered well and hit the side around a two-out double by Andrew McCutchen.
Bryce Harper gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead, with 3 RBIs and 2 RBIs. In fact, seven of the first thirteen batters reached the base against Wozichechovski, but he wiggles from bigger troubles, keeping the Phillies down to two runs in four innings.
The Yankees will make regular rotations in Boston this weekend and hope Nestor Cortes Jr. will be back early next week from the COVID-19 injured list in the three-game series at Tampa Bay.
The next seven games may allow the Yankees to decide whether they are buyers or sellers with a closing date of July 30th.
“It’s not a secret who our biggest rivals are and where we are in the standings,” Brett Gardner said. “The next road trip will be a very important week of baseball. I’m looking forward to this weekend’s game. It’s always a fun place to play.”
The Yankees, like all other competing clubs, want to add starting pitchers in the trade. However, they may have to settle to add two Cy Young Award winners and their ex-staff ace who threw no-hitters earlier this season.
Corey Kluber will be straining his right shoulder from May 26th and will have his first bullpen session with one start after a no-hitter no-run to the Rangers on Friday.
Discarding the mound is an important step for a crew bar who is 4-3, 3.04 overall with 10 starts. Kluber chose rehab over more aggressive treatment, hoping he could return at once. Now he’s going to try it and his shoulders.
Luis Severino wants a chance to start the game this season after suffering an groin injury at the start of rehab in June. After returning from Tommy John’s surgery, Severino will practice live batting at Yankee Stadium on Sunday and may be cleared for a second minor league rehab stint by next week.
If Deivi García continued to make progress with six starts at the end of last season, things would be easier for the Yankees.
However, Garcia struggled with a short stint in this season’s majors (0-2, 6.48 ERA in two starts) and Scranton (2-3, 6.89 ERA in 13 appearances), so the 22-year-old passed. Wojciechowski for the start on Wednesday.
Garcia allowed 3 runs in 6 innings for Scranton on Tuesday and hit 9. The Yankees could have delayed him by a day if he wanted to play Phillies on Wednesday. They didn’t.
“He’s certainly one of those guys in that combination we’ve considered,” Boone said. “It’s been a tough year for him and no doubt the start of the year was tough. He’s heading in the right direction and throwing the ball better. I know he threw better. (Tuesday). I haven’t seen it yet, but it encourages me to see the rise we’ve seen in the last few years starting with him. ”
