At least 40 people were found dead behind the tractor trailer

San Antonio (The Associated Press)

U.S. officials say at least 40 people were found dead in trailer trucks in an attempt to smuggle migrants in southern Texas.

Officials say the other 15 trucks were taken to a hospital in San Antonio, where the body was found on Monday. Officials spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the information was not allowed to be disclosed.

This may be the deadliest tragedy of the thousands of people who have died trying to cross the border from Mexico to the United States in recent decades. Ten immigrants died in 2017 after being trapped in a truck parked in Wal-Mart, San Antonio. In 2003, 19 immigrants were found on a sultry truck southeast of San Antonio.

Big rigs emerged as a popular smuggling method in the early 1990s amid the surge in US border security between San Diego and El Paso, Texas. These were the busiest corridors of illegal crossings at the time.

Before that, people paid a small fee to moms and pop operators to take them across the mostly defenseless borders. After the terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001, crossing became exponentially difficult, and immigrants went through more dangerous terrain and paid more than a few thousand dollars.

Heat poses a serious danger, especially if the temperature inside the car can rise significantly. The weather in the San Antonio area was mostly cloudy on Monday, but temperatures approached 100 degrees Celsius.
