Australia cleared the first COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 on Sunday, and the next phase of vaccine deployment is expected to begin in early 2022.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said medical regulators have tentatively approved the administration of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Young children first time.

This follows similar decisions in the European Union, the United States, Israel and Canada.

Vaccination of 2.3 million Australian children participating in the cohort will begin on January 10, subject to the approval of the national immune advisory body, Hunt said.

“Recommended for children across Australia,” he said of the vaccine.

“It’s about keeping our children safe, our families safe, and all Australians safe.”

Regulators from the Therapeutic Goods Department said children aged 5 to 11 would receive lower vaccine doses than children aged 12 and over.

John Skellit, head of the agency, said he was confident in both the efficacy and safety of the drug, adding that it was “clinically extensively tested.”

Almost 93% of Australians over the age of 16 have been first vaccinated, and 88% of the population has been vaccinated twice.

The booster shot was approved in October and people were encouraged to receive a third jab six months later.
