Holiday Travel Weather: Winter Storms, Blistering Colds Hit US

New York (WABC) — Massive winter storms make holiday travel dangerous and bring life-threatening cold to much of the country ahead of Christmas.

A powerful Holiday Week storm will spread Thursday through Friday, along with strong winds that will bring heavy snow in high altitude areas and heavy rain elsewhere, including in the New York City metropolitan area.

The millions of people traveling by road and air before Christmas could face major problems getting to their destinations on time.

Two-thirds of domestic flights could be affected by heavy storms on Thursday and Friday. According to AccuWeather meteorologists.

Several major hubs including Chicago, Detroit and New York City are all on the track of the storm and facing significant disruption. Delays in the ripple effects of affected aircraft and crews are felt nationwide.

Delta Air Lines and American Airlines said Thursday and Friday are expected to be their busiest this season.

Airlines canceled more than 2,600 flights on Tuesday. By 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, more than 3,540 flights had been canceled, according to Flight Aware. According to ABC News, the airline has already canceled Thursday’s Flight 774.

  • The good news is that major airlines already offer travel waivers for rescheduling.

    Major airlines at airports outside the area have proposed easing the disruption of cancellations and delays ahead of the weather and waiving change fees and fare differences.

    There are restrictions depending on the destination, so please check the website of your carrier first.

    United Airlines is offering an east coast winter weather waiver for Thursday-Sunday travelers who purchase tickets before December 18.

    American will also waive the fee if you purchase your ticket by December 19th and plan to travel between the 22nd and Christmas Eve.

    Jet Blue has issued a winter weather fee waiver for the Midwest. If you’re traveling from our area to Chicago, Kansas, Milwaukee, or St. Paul, change and cancellation fees will be waived for customers traveling between December 21st and 23rd. Need to rebook before Christmas.

    Scott Keyes of Scotts Cheap Flights says he has the right to get money back for canceled domestic flights if the flight is cancelled.
