Big Bend Second Harvest, Volunteers Fill 20K Backpacks to Feed Poor Students

Tallahassee, Florida (WTXL) — To keep students from getting hungry in our community, volunteers gathered at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center on Friday for a second harvest of Big Bend’s backpack Blitz.

Goal: Pack enough food in your backpack so that students in the eight counties offered by Second Harvest can eat nutritious food on weekends during the school year.

“Today we set a goal of 20,000 people. Over 500 volunteers helped with this. We achieved that goal, which means 3,000 backpacks every Friday. Will be on sale. The first week of school is three weeks away, so it’s going to be incredible, “said Monique Ellsworth of Big Bend’s Second Harvest.

Backpack Blitz is part of Second Harvest’s Envision No Hunger campaign in July.I still have time to donate-just go fightinghunger.org..
