Breast cancer survivors get together and raise awareness through the Brooklyn fashion show

Brooklyn, Coney Island (WABC)-Wednesday night in Brooklyn, a fashion show full of models fighting breast cancer was held. They gathered to celebrate more than fashion and to celebrate life.

What if the runway is scattered and plastered with hope? What if the runway means a life-defining journey?

Maimonides Park on Connie Island was covered in pink on Wednesday night and oozes optimistically.

For some, it was the end of a long journey.

“It’s been a very long journey for me and I feel very fortunate,” said Karen Carrie, a breast cancer survivor. “There were two heart problems as well as cancer … I’m breathing, walking, talking, and hopefully biking soon.”

For others, it was about the lessons learned during the fierce battle.

Breast cancer survivor Cheryl Williams said, “I really opened my eyes to not only surviving life, but to live more.”

But for all models (all breast cancer survivors), it was the beginning of something beautiful.

“The connection is something I’ve never experienced before,” said survivor Cynthia Futrel Wilson. “I met him for the first time and was immediately connected.”

It was the annual Pink Runway by the Maimonides Breast Center and the first year at the Brooklyn stadium.

It was COVID friendly and big enough to barely contain all the life that jumped off the runway.

“I think this event is about hope,” said Dr. Patrick Borgen, director of surgery at the Maimonides Medical Center. “It’s about optimism. It’s about tomorrow and the next day.”

So they raised awareness together and celebrated the power and courage of breast cancer survivors. And I built an unbreakable bond.

“They are all beautiful, they are all wonderful, and I could hope they were all the best forever,” Futrell-Wilson said.

The darkness between these new friends can’t stand the chance.
