British court overturns 39 post office leaders conviction

London – The British Court of Appeals, which was established more than 20 years ago, operated a local post office and overturned 39 convictions accused of theft, fraud and false accounting. ..

Judge Timothy Holroid, who announced a court ruling on Friday, said the British post office “knows that there are serious reliability problems” with the Horizon computer system developed by Fujitsu. He said he had a “clear obligation to investigate” the deficiency. ..

“The failure of Post Office Limited’s investigation and disclosure was terrible enough to insult the court’s conscience for any charges in the’Horizon case’,” the judge said.

Convicted postmasters and postmasters have spent years, up to 20 years trying to reveal their names, consistently arguing that the responsibility for the identified financial shortage lies with the computer system itself. The three appeals were dismissed because “the reliability of the Horizon data was not essential to the indictment.”

Many convicted people lost their jobs, homes, and marriages, while others went to jail or were sentenced to probation.

Hazinder Butoy, who was convicted of theft in 2008 and sentenced to three years and four months in prison, described the post office as “humiliation” after his conviction was overturned.

Butoi, who ran a local post office in the northern English city of Nottingham, said his conviction and imprisonment “destroyed” his life for 14 years.

“It won’t be replaced,” he said outside the Royal Courts of Justice, adding that the responsible person “needs to be punished and needs to be seriously punished.”
