Police are investigating the death of a Cape Coral man in a car accident Thursday afternoon.
According to Cape Coral police, Umberto Munoz, 57, was driving east at very high speed in the right lane of Diplomat Parkway at around 3:40 pm. According to witnesses, Munoz’s car approached a road curve near 700 blocks on the Diplomat Parkway, eventually leaving the road and traveling hundreds of feet through a vacant lot.
The front of the car collided with a wooden utility pole of the Lee County Electric Cooperative, causing the car to rotate counterclockwise with the passenger side at the front. After that, I started to roll over to the passenger seat side at high speed many times. During this time, Munoz was driven out of the car onto the road and overturned into the car and died.
Both directions of Diplomat Parkway were closed for several hours during the initial investigation. The CCPD classifies accidents as speed-related, but states that it is unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved. The accident is still under investigation.
