Cape Coral Police say possible swatting call at Mariner High School

cape coral

Authorities cleared everything after a possible swatting call at Mariner High School on Thursday afternoon led to police action.

Schools have been placed on short-term lockdown, but students are now dropping out of school as normal.

Mariner Middle was also locked down as a precaution.

Swatting calls lead to bus delays, according to the school district. The school district is also asking the public to avoid the area due to increased traffic.

The school is located at 701 Chiquita Boulevard North and serves students from Cape Coral, the neighboring villages of Pine Island, and North Fort Myers.

Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said the police department received a call at 1:08 pm and was warned that six students had been shot dead at a high school.

Sizemore said two school resource officers were on the scene and immediately took action, locking down the school.

Sizemore said Cape Coral police heard it on the radio and everyone was at the school within two minutes.

“There was no discussion about who was responsible,” Sizemore said, referring to the slow response at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. “Not here.”

Students were then escorted outside the school so that officers could search the school in a more “detailed manner.” they didn’t find anything.

Sizemore said the community doesn’t have time to do this after the pandemic and Hurricane Ian.

Sizemore said no arrests have been made. He said the voice on the phone appeared to be male, but he may have used voice-changing software.

Sizemore said the beating incident was very emotional for the students, adding that he would stop once he saw the toll people take on the students.

Cape Coral Police held a press conference about the incident. Watch it in the video player below.
