Carvalho asks Desantis to prioritize teachers

Miami-Dade County, Florida – Miami-Dade County Public School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho urges Governor Ron DeSantis to give teachers and school staff preferential access to the coronavirus vaccine.

In a recent letter to DeSantis, Carvalho wrote that priority access to vaccines by MDCPS is important because it helps to promote “stabilization of our community and our economy.” I will.

Just as the federal government is preparing to distribute the vaccine to state authorities, Dr. Peter Page, Chief Clinical Officer and Physician Executive at Jackson Health Systems, advises MDCPS. Daniela Levin Cava, the new mayor of Miami-Dade County, recently appointed Page as the new Chief Medical Officer of Miami-Dade.

DeSantis said on Tuesday that the vaccine would first be distributed to the Florida care facility and hospital workforce. He said the teacher and the first responder would follow.

Carla Hernandez Matt, president of Dado’s United Teachers, supports Carvalho’s request for Desantis to prioritize schools.

“We believe it is important because we have direct contact with our children and the community every day,” said Hernandez Matt.

Carvalho also demanded that public schools have more access to more reliable PCR tests than rapid antigen tests.

MDCPS offers PCR tests to teachers and their families on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at three sites:

Maintenance Service Center I so 12525 NW 28 Ave., Miami, 33167

Store and email delivery so 7001 SW 4 St., Miami, 33144

Transport Bureau so 15401 SW 117 Ave., Miami, 33177
