In several states, including Florida, there is a surge in food poisoning, Cyclospora. The number of cases of Cyclospora almost doubled in 14 days.
Amy Cornell lives in the Gainesville area, but spends a significant amount of money in southern Fort Myers. But lately she spends a lot of time in the bathroom.
“So, in mid-June, both my son and I had this horrific diarrhea. I know it’s terrible, but it causes us stomach and gastrointestinal pain and a little nausea. I had one, “said Cornell.
After several weeks of trying different treatments with antibiotics, immodium, and numerous tests, Lee Health’s doctor diagnosed Cornell. “We’re back positive for a fresh fruit and vegetable parasite called cyclosporiasis,” she said.
Mary Beth Saunders is Lee Health’s Physician and Systems Medical Director. “It usually takes about a week after someone takes cyclospora and gets sick. Sometimes it gets a little longer,” said Dr. Sanders.
Sanders did not treat Cornell, but she is very familiar with parasites because she is an infectious disease expert. “When people have it, it’s unpleasant, and it usually clears on its own. But for some people, the immune system may not be as healthy as others, for weeks or months. Some people may continue, “says Cornell University.
It’s been about two months since Cornell lived with her symptoms, and she says, some friends said they experienced the same thing. “A friend of Fort Myers came back with four or six people and said,” Oh, well, I have these symptoms, or my brother, or my husband, “said Cornell University. Stated.
Diarrhea is the most common symptom, but others include:
- Decreased appetite
- Weight loss
I’m not sure how Cornell got here, but I have one idea. “I think I ate fresh cherries. Maybe I didn’t wash them well,” she said.
Cornell actually works in the medical field on his own and is advised to ask a doctor for GI screening if he has similar persistent symptoms. Dr. Sanders tells you to wash your hands with soap and water whenever you work with fruits and vegetables. Not only does it help with food poisoning, it also helps keep you dealing with COVID-19.
