Colorado marks the latest major tragedy after 10 people have been killed

Boulder, Colorado. – Shooting in a crowded Colorado supermarket kills 10 people, including the first police officer, and scares shoppers and workers fighting for safety in a state mourning several mass murders I was surprised. One suspect was in custody, officials said.

Hundreds of police officers from across the Denver metropolitan area responded to the attack on Monday afternoon, gathering at the King Supers supermarket in the bustling shopping plaza south of Boulder. A SWAT police officer with a ballistic shield slowly approached the store, quickly escorting others frightened people from the building, and some of the windows shattered. Customers and employees fled through a loading dock for safety. Others have evacuated to a nearby store.

One of the suspects had been detained, weeping Boulder police chief Maris Herold said late Monday. Authorities did not identify the suspect, but Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said only the suspect was injured and was receiving medical care.

Police escorted a shirtless man handcuffed from the store during the siege, and blood spilled on his feet. Authorities do not say whether he is a suspect. Boulder’s Foothills Hospital was treating one person from the shooting scene, but declined to comment further, said Rich Sheehan, a spokesman for Boulder Community Health, who runs the hospital.

“This is a tragedy and a nightmare for Boulder County,” said Doherty. “These were the people who were shopping and spending the day. We promise to the victims and the people of Colorado that we will ensure justice.”

Herold identified the murdered police officer as Eric Tally, 51, who had been with the Boulder police since 2010. She said he arrived first after answering a phone call about someone with a shot and a rifle.

“He was one of the best police officers at the Boulder Police Station on every account, and his life was too short,” Doherty said.

Dozens of police and emergency vehicles flashed lights, and after dawn, escorted an ambulance with police officers from the shooting scene. Some inhabitants stood along the route and their arms were raised in honor.

The identities of the other nine victims were not revealed as police had still notified their families.

Dougherty said it was too early to speculate on motivation and that investigations involving local, state and federal agencies would take days.

Approximately 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Denver, the attacks at Boulder, home of the University of Colorado, included several shootings at the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999 and the Aurora Film Theater in 2012. I was surprised at the state when I saw the shootings.

According to a database compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University, the attack on Monday afternoon was the seventh mass this year after eight people were killed in a shooting on March 16 at three massage companies in the Atlanta area. It was a murder.

This follows the calm of mass murders during the 2020 pandemic, according to a database that tracks mass slaughter defined as four or more dead, not including archers.

Dean Schiller said he had just left the supermarket when he heard the gunshot. He saw three people lying down. One is in the door and two are in the parking lot. Schiller said he didn’t know if they were breathing.

Sarah Moonshadow and her son Nicholas Edwards had just bought strawberries when they heard the gunshots. Moonshadow told The Denver Post that they duck and “just ran.” Outside, Edwards said the police arrived and pulled him up next to his body in the parking lot.

“We knew we couldn’t do anything for the guy,” he said. “We had to go.”

A video posted on YouTube showed that one person was on the floor inside the store and two outside were on the ground. Sounds like two bullets at the beginning of the video.

Investigators have just begun organizing crime scenes and conducting interviews with witnesses, Doherty said. Matthew Kirsch, deputy federal prosecutor in Colorado, has promised that “the total weight of federal law enforcement agencies” will assist in the investigation. He said investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene of the crime with FBI agents.

White House spokesman Jen Psaki tweeted that President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting. Meanwhile, Governor Jared Polis said in a statement: I am saddened by my community and all Coloradans. “The King Supers Chain said in a statement that it is providing prayer and support” to our peers, customers, and first responders who bravely responded to this tragic situation. ”
