Northeastern University Explosion: University evacuated as one person reported injured after Holmes Hall explosion

Boston — An employee suffered minor injuries after a package exploded on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston late Tuesday, the university said. Authorities said another suspicious package was found near a prominent museum and the FBI is assisting with the investigation.

The exploding package was one of two packages reported to the police earlier in the evening. The Boston Bomb Squad was at the site of his second package near the Museum of Fine Arts, on the outskirts of his Northeastern campus.

NBC Boston reported an explosion near the university’s Holmes Hall, home to the university’s creative writing program, when a package was opened. The FBI said it was assisting the investigation.

Authorities declined to provide details, but Northeast spokesperson Shannon Nargi said in a statement that an unidentified university employee suffered minor injuries in the blast.

Police converged on the campus shortly before 7:30 p.m., and the university asked students who had gathered for evening journalism classes in the hall to evacuate the building.

Northeastern is a private university located in downtown Boston. WCVB said one of his reporters, Mike Beaudet, was teaching a class there at the time. Beaudet told the station that his class had moved outside, but neither he nor his students heard the explosion.

Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which sit across the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge, said they are increasing patrols on campus as a precautionary measure and urging students and faculty to report anything suspicious.
