NHL playoffs: Devils eliminated after 3-2 overtime loss to Hurricanes

Raleigh, North Carolina — With 7 minutes and 9 seconds of overtime, Jesper Fast deflected a Jesperi Kotkaniemi shot to give the Carolina Hurricanes a series-ending 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.

The Hurricanes were in a celebratory mood as Fast deflected while guarding Akira Schmidt. The Hurricanes never led until the final play, but after trailing by one point twice, they won the series best-seven 4-1 to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

In the first close game of the second round, Fast made a point of throwing the puck over goal in front of an open net in the first period.

Jacob Slavin and Brent Burns also scored for Carolina, and Frederick Andersen made 27 saves.

Dawson Mercer and Timo Meyer scored for New Jersey. Schmidt stopped 36 shots.

Carolina will reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2019. The Hurricanes will face the winner of the Florida-Toronto series, with the Panthers leading 3-1.

The first four games of the series were filled with uneven results, each with at least four goals and the starting goalkeepers being chased early on. Carolina won their first two games at home by a wide 11-2 margin, shrugged off a Game 3 loss in the second period, and won Game 4 6-1 on the road Tuesday. .

The Hurricanes held this position in Game 1 and had a chance to shut out the New York Islanders on home ice in Game 5. The Hurricanes lost it and instead had to seal the series with an overtime road win in Game 6.

This time, a dramatic finish was needed to avoid a recurrence.

The Devils’ departure came in a season when the young group entered postseason contention earlier than expected.

New Jersey finished third in the league in total points scored (112) in the Metropolitan Division, one point behind the Hurricanes, and made the playoffs for the first time in five years. They beat the rival New York Rangers. It was their first playoff series win since 2012.

missed chance

Both teams missed an obvious easy putaway, and it loomed large as the game entered OT.

The Hurricanes’ early chances included a deflection of Seth Jarvis hitting the right post about six minutes into the game. Paul Stastney then found Fast at the top of the crease, but he was sent off after only witnessing Fast lift the puck over the exposed net. He shook his head indignantly as he returned to the bench.

The Devils’ moment of frustration came in a wild second period sequence.

Meyer stole the ball behind the Carolina net and started a pass-happy sequence. The puck crossed from Michael McLeod to Phil Hughes just outside Cleese and then to Meyer on the other side for a putaway chance, only for Meyer to send the puck. Harmless through creases and outside.
