Early Tuesday morning, a deadly fire destroyed the Cape Coral veterans’ home.
The fire marshal is investigating how the fire started. The crew went to South East 3rd Street near Cape Coral Hospital and discovered that the fire had spread across the roof and partially collapsed. There was a risk that it would spread to other properties. Ryan Lam, chief of the Cape Coral fire department, said at a news conference that someone had died in the fire, but he did not identify anyone. Investigators are working to determine their identity and the specific cause of death.
Neighbors tell WINK News that a veteran in his 70s owns a home. His yard and house were once full of junk, and he made multiple code violations. Neighbors say the owner cleaned a lot of the crap that filled his yard, the interior was very cluttered. Ram said at a news conference that the house had more material than most fires can see.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
