Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law on Monday limiting local government emergency orders related to COVID-19 and creating a permanent ban on vaccine “passports.”
He also signed an executive order limiting the power of these regions until the bill came into effect on July 1.
DeSantis at a restaurant in St. Petersburg for signature said, “We are no longer in a state of emergency” while the fight against COVID-19 continues.
He cited the effectiveness of vaccines to slow the spread of the disease and the need for people to maintain their personal freedom.
“I think this is evidence-based action,” he said.
“People who say they need to crack down on people at this point … I think you’re saying you really don’t believe in vaccines, you don’t believe in data, you don’t believe in science. We’re vaccines. And accepted the science. “
Executive orders and laws that come into force immediately affect government actions such as fines related to Mask’s obligations and restrictions. The governor said it does not prevent companies from issuing their own requirements for their customers.
“When it comes to supermarkets, Disney, or theme parks, it doesn’t handle it in any way,” DeSantis said.
He said individuals who wish to wear masks or follow personal protocols may continue.
The bill prohibits businesses, schools and government agencies from requiring people to present a document certifying that they have been vaccinated with COVID-19 (the so-called vaccine “passport”).
It also allows the governor to invalidate local orders during a health crisis and imposes time limits on some emergency orders.
State and local orders for public health emergencies lasted up to 7 days and could be extended indefinitely in 7-day increments. Major limits maximum extension in 42 days.
This limitation does not apply to hurricanes or weather-related emergencies.
