DeSantis Parliament Map tears the black representative’s district

Tallahassee, Florida — The black parliamentary district will be demolished under a map of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis submitted to the state legislature.

DeSantis submitted the map on Wednesday prior to next week’s special session.

This session was called after the governor rejected a map sent by a Republican-controlled state legislature.

Parliamentarians handed over control of the process to DeSantis. DeSantis’ proposal will increase Florida’s Republican seats, while making it more difficult for Democrat Al Lawson to maintain seats in northern Florida extending west of Tallahassee from Jacksonville.

Before the map was submitted, DeSantis said it would not allow a 200-mile long district to ensure that black voters could choose black candidates.

Lawson released a statement Wednesday, “Today’s revelation is DeSantis’ ongoing plan to eliminate the minority access district of Congress to increase Republican seats.

“DeSantis is penalizing Florida voters by playing partisan politics. This latest map clearly violates the Voting Rights Act and the Constitutions of the United States and Florida.”
