It is estimated that more than 6.8 million people worldwide suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is thought to be the result of a malfunction of the immune system, causing an inappropriate immune response that attacks the lining of the intestine.

There is no cure or exact cause, but researchers continue to investigate how genes, microbiomes, and environmental factors are involved in this chronic disease. Dr. Amanda Johnson, a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist, can help you better understand if IBD and diet can help.

IBD is a broad term for chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. There are two types: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

“Ulcerative colitis is really only related to the colon and tends to be a more superficial type of inflammation, while Crohn’s disease is essentially anything in the intestine, from the mouth to the anus. “It can affect,” says Dr. Johnson.

She says diet alone does not cause IBD. Some foods may reduce symptoms, but there is no proven diet to control inflammation.

“The proper diet will probably vary from person to person, based on the type of IBD they have, the location of their illness, and whether they had surgery or other complications,” said Dr. Johnson. say.

Focus on fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid super-processed foods, added sugars and animal fats. And drink plenty of water for hydration.

The diet is not a replacement for treatment. Dr. Johnson says it’s important to work with your healthcare provider because there are effective treatment options.

“The treatment tenant we have is an immunosuppressive type of treatment that seeks to reduce inflammation in the intestines by targeting inappropriate reactions to the intestines,” she says.
