Donald Elise Watkins has absorbed the praise of his new film, emergency..Adult Buddy Comedy directed by Carrie Williams — this year’s premiere Sundance Film Festival — Two college students, Kunle (Watkins) and Sean (RJ Cyler), set out on a spectacular party night hoping to be the first black students to complete the school’s legendary fraternity party tour. Sounds very simple, doesn’t it? Now, if you find a drunken white girl fainting in the living room before the night begins, their plans go crazy. Kunle and Sean need to act swiftly and weigh the pros and cons of whether to call a police officer.

Watkins starring straight-medical student Kunle tags his arc-smoking best friend’s adventure basically just to soothe him. Kunle is from a privileged family and has just entered Princeton University. Sean, on the other hand, grew up in a less privileged environment and is already aware of the implications of being black in the United States. This distinction is clear from the beginning of the movie. “There are so many different undertones in your own race with prejudice and division,” Watkins tells the movie POPSUGAR. “It’s interesting because I didn’t grow up like Kunle. I grew up like Sean … [But] I think his innocence really fascinated me because it wasn’t in my own life. In a sense, Watkins realized that he was jealous of Kunle’s simplicity. And everything is OK. And that’s not always the case, “Watkins points out.

The film addresses a variety of important social issues, from racial injustice to black masculinity. And, as a colorful person myself, there were some scenes that were very difficult to see, but Williams does a great job of balancing comedy and drama. “These are conversations that need to be dealt with and made,” says Watkins. “I have a son and he doesn’t like medicine. He doesn’t take it. He’s like,” Wait, is it medicine? No, I’m fine. ” But if you give him it like “Oh no, these are gummy candies”. He seems to be “OK, cool”. …. So it’s like giving [these conversations] To people in the form of gummy. .. .. We are not here to answer the question because we do not answer any question in our society. “

Another highlight of the movie is watching the friendship between Kunle and Sean unfold on the screen. I rarely see two black men show off their emotions. And for those who are wondering, yes, Watkins and Siler are just as tight in real life. “RJ is one of the greatest people you’ve ever met in your life, and that’s why I’ve been so comfortable,” Watkins said, saying that Siler was the first person to meet from the cast and crew. I made it clear. “I care about him as a human. I care about him as a human. And I only shot a handful of places where he wasn’t on the set. Previously, RJ was my little. [security] blanket. ”

emergency Sebastian Chacon, Sabrina Carpenter and Maddy Nichols also appear. Between takes, Watkins got hooked on the cast by taking pictures, playing “rock-paper-scissors”, and occasionally jumping into songs. Specifically, check out Tobe Nwigwe’s “Make It Home.” In the video above. “It was a really really easy cast and crew to join. I think it’s the best cast, the best crew. It doesn’t downplay anyone I’ve ever worked with. I I love them. I always work with them, “says Watkins. “There was this’Make It Home’song. Literally, all we want these characters to do is go home at the end of the night. We’re in a very realistic situation and in a dire situation. Yes, we need to help with this. People, but we also have to think about ourselves and have to go home. I don’t know if that will actually happen. “

Following the premiere of the Sundance Film Festival emergency Will be released in a limited release on May 20th, prior to the official premiere of Prime Video on May 27th. Watkins understands that the film resonates differently than everyone else, but hopes it will serve as a form of healing. “I hope it [viewers] You can see different perspectives, inspire conversations, and change something, “says Watkins. I love that just playing with one or two things can leave us vulnerable. Not so many in young black men. Watkins wants viewers to know that “trauma is not something you just have to endure and deal with.”

The sky is really the limit when it comes to the following things about Watkins: And if Williams is down to make a sequel movie, consider Watkins! “When they show up, I’m showing up,” he shouts. “I’m ready.”
