The Duke Women’s Basketball Team ended the season on Friday in a coronavirus pandemic.
Michael Schoenfeld, Duke University’s Vice President of Public Relations and Chief of Communications, said:
“We support the choices made by all Duke’s student athletes during this unprecedented time, so we support their decisions. Duke maintains the current competition schedule in other sports and We will continue to adhere to rigorous health and safety protocols based on guidance from leading medical professionals, including daily testing of all student athletes. ”
The men’s basketball team was scheduled to continue playing.
The women’s basketball team has been suspended since 16 December due to two positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing within the program’s travel party. Blue Devils (3-1) has postponed a match against North Carolina State University Wilmington, Miami, NC. The team’s next scheduled contest was against Louisville on Thursday.
Blue Devils is the first Power Five team to drop out after the start of the season. The Ivy League quit winter sports in November, before the basketball season began. I also decided not to play at some other schools.
Kara Lawson, a new coach hired in July, said this month: That is my opinion. It was the day after Duke’s men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski asked why college basketball was playing in the midst of a pandemic.
After losing to Illinois on December 8, Duke’s Hall of Fame coach said, “I want you to evaluate the safety, mental and physical health of your players and staff.”
Krzyzewski cited an increase in COVID-19 cases as the basis for his claim.
“People say the next six weeks will be the worst,” Krzyzewski said at the time. “For me, that’s already pretty bad. On the other side, these vaccines are out. By the end of the month, 20 million vaccinations will be done. By the end of January or February, one more. Billion people. Shouldn’t it be reassessed? Do you know what’s best? “
The virus canceled or postponed many games in the first month of the season. Countless teams are paused due to a positive test in the program. The NCAA said earlier this month that San Antonio plans to play the tournament in a single geographic area, which is the top choice.
