East New York Farms is working to tackle Brooklyn’s food justice

Brooklyn, East New York (WABC)-East New York Farm is located in Brooklyn and its goal is to grow nutritious foods in a sustainable manner.

“We grow healthy foods, offer them at really reasonable prices, and provide the tools people need to grow their own foods,” said Youth Farm Manager Jeremy Teperman. I want to contribute to the well-being of people. “

Their purpose through this farm is to tackle food justice.

“Many gardeners and many community members feel really connected to the farm. When they come to the market, they seem to come from my neighborhood,” said Youth Program Coordinator Tiana Rainford. rice field.

ABC’s Equity Report highlights the issue of food inequity.

The report found that many food deserts exist in the New York area, where access to affordable and nutritious foods is restricted.

“There are some luxury stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Union Markets where you can get really healthy ingredients, but it’s a premium,” says Teperman.

East New York Farms actually meet with their neighbors and figure out what kind of produce they want.

Interns from local schools provide the farm with the necessary assistance, which gives them the coveted escape.

“Some young people use it as a remedy. They take time to walk on the farm, it feels different. It’s a different atmosphere for them,” Rainford said.

Participants say they have another sense of pride in getting into the physical view of the work of their hands.

There are also places where neighbors grow their produce on the farm.

“I feel like I’m giving back to something that gives me a lot,” Rainford said.

East New York Farms is always looking for volunteers. If you’re interested, you can find out more on the farm’s website.
