Ecuadorian Olympic sprinter Alex Quiñones was deadly shot in Guayaquil

From Guayaquil, Ecuador-Ecuadorian sprinter Alex Quiñones was shot dead in the port city of Guayaquil, police said Saturday.

At the age of 32, Kinones became a national hero when he reached the 200-meter final at the London 2012 Games and finished seventh in the race that Usain Bolt won.

The Guayaquil-based newspaper El Universo reported that Quiñónez was fatally shot on a street in the northwestern part of the city around 9:20 pm on Friday, killing another man.

There were no immediate reports of the arrest.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso vowed in a statement Saturday that the killings “can’t be punished.”

Kinones’ death was also confirmed by the Ecuadorian Olympic Commission Olympic Commission in a statement on Saturday. “The situation of his death has not yet been revealed,” he said.

Kinones won the bronze medal in 200 at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.

Andrea Sotomayor, the secretary-general of the Ecuadorian Olympic Commission, expressed her sadness and anger on Twitter, accusing her of “a great deal of evil.”

“There are no words to express the sadness, helplessness, or resentment that overwhelms me,” wrote Sotomayor, a former sports minister. “Alex Quiñones was a synonym for humility and a clear example of resilience. His loss leaves pain in our chests.”

Guayaquil and other parts of Ecuador suffer from high levels of crime. This month, Lasso declared a state of emergency to combat drug trafficking and other crimes in Ecuador, and said troops and police would be on the streets to ensure safety.

This year, there was a rebellion in national prisons due to drug violence, especially in Guayaquil, which resulted in the slaughter of rival gang prisoners related to the Mexican drug cartel. About 230 people died from these compounds.
