Nearly three years after beloved hairstylist was shot dead at gas station, family still wants answers

jacksonville, florida – A Jacksonville mother continues to fight for justice after her daughter was murdered nearly three years ago.

Popular hairstylist Brittany Matthews was shot multiple times at a Shell gas station on Edgewood Avenue in August 2020.

Alfreda Matthews, a 31-year-old mother, said there were no new leads in her daughter’s case and her family still wants justice.

“The grief of losing a child has no time limit. You have to do it every day,” Matthews said.

Investigators said a man in a silver Nissan Rouge got out of the car and fired several shots at Matthew’s car. Then he drove off.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office found the car the suspect was driving and released images of a man and a woman believed to be of interest.

Still no arrests have been made.

Matthew’s mother said she felt surreal when she got the call that her daughter had been shot.

“That it wasn’t real. That it just wasn’t real. It still doesn’t feel real,” Matthews said. “My prayers for the loose tongue is that someone will finally speak up and not be afraid to just tell you what happened to my child.”

Matthews said her daughter dreamed of becoming a celebrity hairstylist.

“I’m never going up. In time, I can’t give up anything. As long as I’m breathing, I can’t,” Matthews said.

If you have information about this shooting, please call 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS. A reward of 9,000 will be paid for information leading to an arrest.
