Eric Deolibeira charged with hate crimes attacking an Asian-American woman at a rally in New York

Manhattan (WABC)-According to police, a man was arrested and charged with hate crimes after attacking an Asian-American mother who attended a rally against anti-Asian violence in New York City.

NYPD officials announced the arrest of 27-year-old Erick Deoliveira on Monday night.

They say he was charged with hate crime assault and criminal mischief as a hate crime.

The attacked Asian-American mother talked about an incident her daughter had to witness.

The 37-year-old woman was on her way to an Asian-American rally at Union Square on Sunday morning with her 7-year-old daughter during the attack.

The mother didn’t want to give her a name, but said she was still upset. She has a sprained ankle, a crutch, and still has a bruise and laceration on her face.

She says the suspect approached her and asked for her signature. She gave it to him because she thought he was heading to the rally, and that was when he saw him tearing it up and trashing it.

When she asked him to stop, he hit her face twice, so she chased him.

“He was trying to destroy the sign and put it in the trash, so I walked forward and said to him,” What are you doing? ” He came in front of me and hit me in the face, so I stopped for a moment and chased, and there were people around me, so I wanted to call him and call the police. “

Some good Samaritans were able to chase him and rush to Astor Place subway station to take pictures of the attackers.

“When you see that happening, it’s your job to make sure they’re seen and heard,” said Devon Francis.

They said the suspect appeared to be emotionally confused before escaping by train.

“He also flashed people on the platform. He dropped his underwear and showed genitals to everyone on the platform,” Francis said.

According to the NYPD, there have been 23 anti-Asia hate crimes so far this year, compared to 29 in 2020 overall.

Mayor Bill de Blasio supported the Asian community and urged the community to speak out for them and help report everything you saw.

“In the last few days, two women have been attacked, and older men have been attacked just because they are,” De Blasio said. “This is disgusting to me and offends me. We deal positively.”

Over the weekend, a 66-year-old man was beaten in Chinatown, and a 54-year-old woman was beaten in the face with a metal pipe by a man shouting a slur.

The man reportedly shouted, “I came here to (curse) Asians,” at around 4:45 pm on Sunday. Elias Guerrero, 38, was arrested on the scene and charged with assault as a hate crime that resisted arrest, harassment, criminal possession of weapons, and criminal possession of controlled drugs.
