EU drug Watchdog said on Friday that after increased production at two new US sites, Block is likely to receive more than 40 million Moderna vaccines by October.
At the time, the site estimated that it would “permit monthly production of an additional 1 to 2 million vials of ready-to-use vaccines for the European Union market.”
On Friday, the EMA said it had approved a production increase on its US site “which is expected to have a significant impact on the supply of Spikevax” using the Moderna vaccine brand name.
“In the third quarter of 2021, the US supply chain is estimated to provide 40 million doses of vaccine to the European market.”
About 70% of adults in the European Union have been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine at least once, EU Prime Minister Ursula von der Leyen said earlier this week.
Overall, 57% of people over the age of 18 are fully vaccinated in 27 countries, she said in a statement.
However, she warned of a “very dangerous” delta variant of the virus that is becoming more and more established on the continent and infection rates are starting to rise again.
“Therefore, I call on everyone who has the opportunity to be vaccinated, for my own health and to protect others,” she said.
Last week, the EMA approved the use of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine in children aged 12 to 17 years. This will be the second jab for adolescents used on the continent.
