The panel of experts endorsed a second COVID-19 vaccine option for children aged 6 to 17 on Thursday.

Advisors to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unanimously voted to recommend Moderna Shot as an option for school-age children and adolescents. This group has been able to take Pfizer shots since last year.

Panel recommendations are usually adopted by the CDC and provide government guidance to US physicians and their patients.

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration approved the shot. Full doses are given to children aged 12 to 17 years, and half-intensity doses are given to children aged 6 to 11 years. The dose is given approximately every 1 month.

The FDA also approved a third dose for children with a significantly weakened immune system, approximately one month after the second dose in the primary series. The CDC is expected to recommend the same.

Moderna officials say they hope to provide boosters to all children aged 6 to 17 later.

It’s not clear how much demand there is for shots. Teens were targeted by Pfizer’s vaccine, which uses the same technique, and only 60% were vaccinated twice. Shots for younger kids started in November. According to the CDC, about 29% are fully vaccinated.

In the United States, more than 600 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in children aged 5 to 17 years. Health officials have also expressed concern about the increased risk over the long term. Health problems Children after infection such as diabetes and problems with the sense of smell and taste.
