Firefighters fight a multi-alarm fire in an apartment in East Orange, NJ. 1 person died

East Orange, NJ (WABC)-Authorities have confirmed that one person was killed in a stubborn, smoky third alarm fire in an apartment in East Orange, NJ.

The fire broke out on Friday after 12:30 am in Prospect Street’s apartment villa and was still burning more than eight hours later.

A fierce fire spread rapidly over four-story buildings and roofs, spewing miles of smoke visible.

The section collapsed when the firefighters fought the flames.

Dozens of residents have been evacuated.

The Essex County Public Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that an elderly woman died in the fire.

Witnesses described the chaotic scene.

“I saw people running up the street towards Prospect Street. They were like’Fire! There’s a fire behind the building!’,” Said one man. “And I went to the emergency stairs, and that was when I saw the building burning.”

East Orange Mayor Ted Greene arrived at the scene after 4am

There were initial reports that two firefighters were taken to a Newark university hospital for checkout.
