FDNY Freshman Probie Helped Rescue Firefighter Dad During Superstorm Sandy

New York City (WABC) — Over 200 men and women are expected to join the ranks of FDNY, and among the graduating class are legacy recruits who already have a bit of experience rescuing people under his belt.

Brendan Woods is the son of Thomas Woods, now a retired Lieutenant, who was recognized for service on Superstorm Sandy.

Thomas was given the department’s top honor for rescuing 25 off-duty people in Bell Harbor, Queens.

Brendan, then 14, was by his side during the rescue.

The Notre Dame graduate is valedictorian leading a class of 288 students and is ready to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Brendan Woods said, “I’m so happy that so many of us have made it this far and we’ve made it here together. We’ve made the dream a reality.”

His class underwent an intensive 18-week training program at ‘The Rock’, FDNY Academy on Randall’s Island.

FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said, “Family threads are woven into every aspect of this work and will continue to grow with your time in the department.

Cabana presided over the ceremony Thursday afternoon in Brooklyn.

“You’re starting a lot of firsts,” said FDNY Director John Hodgens. “Somewhere in your first run, your first fire, your first rescue, and hopefully your first promotion.”

Woods and his fellow trial firefighters are ready to join the ranks of New York City’s bravest firefighters and will be making appearances at fire stations in five boroughs.
