Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reportedly shot during a campaign speech due to heart failure

Tokyo, Japan-Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan appeared to have been shot during a campaign speech in West Japan on Friday and was suffering from heart failure, NHK’s public television said on Friday.

The broadcaster aired Prime Minister Abe falling down the street and several guards running towards him. When Abe collapsed, he was holding his chest with blood on his shirt. According to NHK, Prime Minister Abe was rushed to the hospital.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in an obvious attack in Nara. He stood while giving a campaign speech prior to Sunday’s Senate elections.

According to NHK, police arrested a male suspect on the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.
