Four civilians orbiting the globe on SpaceX’s first private flight

Cape Canaveral, Florida — A historic launch is scheduled for Wednesday night from the Kennedy Space Center. For the first time in history, all civilian crew members will be launched into space for a three-day mission.

The crew is quite qualified.

Behind the mission is 38-year-old Jared Isaacman. A high school dropout became a successful businessman, and Isaacman earned wealth through his company, Shift 4 Payment.

He uses that success to fund his mission. His flight is based on four pillars: leadership, hope, generosity and prosperity.

His team includes Chris Sembroski, Sian Proctor, Jared Isaacman and Hayley Arceneaux.

Doctor Assistant Haley Arseno expresses hope. At the age of 10, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of osteosarcoma.

After chemotherapy and limb-saving surgery, she is currently working as an assistant doctor (PA) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This is the same place where she was treated for cancer and defeated.

“From a medical perspective, I’m very excited about the research I’m doing on this flight, and I’m going to collect a lot of cotton swabs to learn about the microbiome, how it changes during the flight. We plan to run ultrasound to assess changes in body fluids, perform some cognitive tests, and examine the effects of radiation from going high, “says Arsenault.

Chris Sembroski uses his experience as a veteran of the US Air Force to show his generosity. He was a space camp counselor in the United States. While he was in the US Air Force, Sembroski maintained a fleet of Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles and was deployed for a mission in Iraq before leaving active duty in 2007.

“As a mission specialist for this flight, we are really excited to be able to confirm that we have a very successful mission. We handle all medical experiments very well and in human space. It will really help to expand our presence in the long run. “

Dr. Cyan Proctor will be the mission pilot.

She will be the first African-American woman to steer a mission. As a child, she watched in awe and sadness that New Hampshire teacher Sharon Christa McAuliffe was one of the Challenger’s crew.

“Her legacy of being the first teacher in space for me is now this educator going to space, and how can I take everyone with me,” Dr. Proctor said. ..

She is a geoscientist, a university professor, and an analog astronaut who has completed four analog missions.

While in space, the crew orbits the Earth 15 times a day and conducts several tests to learn how the normal human body adapts to high altitudes.

This flight has several first flights, including the highest altitudes humans have orbited since the Hubble Space Telescope service mission. They are also at a higher altitude than the International Space Station.

The three-day mission will also be full of fun. Sembroski will bring his ukulele on board and the new Kings of Leon release will jam out on a Falcon 9 flight.

Isaacman not only uses its mission to continue space exploration, but also as a platform to raise awareness and funding for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His goal is to raise $ 200 million through his flight and related auctions.

“We also chose to do that through the greatest funding efforts in the history of St. Jude Research Hospital. The truth we have on Earth to gain the right to progress in space. I admit that you know your responsibilities, “said Isaacman.

The launch is scheduled for 8:02 pm from the Kennedy Space Center.
