Franklin Square School District on Long Island rejects student mask exemption request from family doctor

Franklin Square, NY (WABC)-A medical consultant at the New York Department of Education said he had rejected a request from a long island elementary school pediatrician that he didn’t need to wear a mask outdoors because of asthma. For documents exclusively obtained by Eyewitness News.

In April, Jeriann, who asked her not to use her family’s surname, asked Franklin Square School District to extend her medical mask exemption to her 10-year-old daughter Savanna, who suffers from asthma.

A pediatrician in Savannah of the Long Island Pediatrics Group wrote to the school district that wearing a mask exacerbates asthma in Savannah and does not require wearing a mask during outdoor sports or activities at John Street School.

The school district rejected the request.

Gerian solved the problem until the temperature started to rise.

In early June, she began again demanding a mask exemption from the savanna. Savannah had difficulty breathing in class and often pulled the mask down to breathe.

Savannah told witness news reporter Christine Thorne earlier this month that she would put her mask near her chin on her way to a break, and her lunch aide would sit her in a chair and miss the break until she put on the mask correctly. Said said.

Savannah recently said she and her friends hid behind a parked car during a break so they could lower their masks. She said the teacher found them and let them sit in a square on the ground, so the teacher was able to monitor them to make sure they were wearing masks.

“Why are you really having trouble trying to breathe?” Savannah asked.

When the school district recently rejected Jerian’s new request for a savanna mask exemption, Jerian demanded to know why the school district rejected the first request in April.

According to the New York State Department of Health, “Students who are medically unacceptable for masks, including those whose masks impair physical or mental health, are not eligible for the required use of masks.”

In a letter dated June 8, Franklin Square director Jared Bloom addressed Jerian to a school district doctor, Dr. Ron Marino, as a consultant to the New York State School Health Center, who confirmed a note from a savanna doctor. I told you.

The New York State School Health Center is a consulting group of the New York State Education Department.

“There was no reason for this medical exemption because Dr. Marino determined that the mask did not cause asthma problems,” Bloom said in a letter.

“He says she can withstand the mask,” Gerian said of Marino. “How could he make a decision about a child he didn’t know?”

When Jerian made his family’s pediatrician aware of Bloom’s June 8 letter, the pediatrician wrote a letter to blow up Marino.

“After talking to Dr. Ron Marino, he refused to admit it. It was not my decision to deny her mask medical exemption,” the doctor wrote. “Dr. Ron Marino has decided to deny her mask medical exemption. He has dismissed my request for the medical needs of my patients.”

Jerian said he was shocked when he received the letter from the pediatrician.

“I can’t believe they would invalidate the doctors who knew her for the decade of her life,” she said.
In Bloom’s letter from June 8, he wrote, “I have confirmed with the Ministry of Health that I have followed all appropriate protocols and procedures for your request.”

“The New York State Health Department does not comment on or review the school district’s decisions regarding individual requirements for exemptions from face mask requirements,” New York State Health Department spokesman Jill Montag told Eyewitness News. Told.

Witness News contacted Bloom many times for an interview on Monday, but he didn’t reply to us.

Witness News contacted the New York State School Health Center in an attempt to contact Dr. Marino, but was told to contact the New York State Department of Education. No one in the department came back to us.
