Major developments after the Turkey-Syria earthquake

Adana – A search team recovered the body of Ghanaian international footballer Christian Atu in the ruins of a building that collapsed during the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria, his manager said Saturday.

The body of a football star who played for Turkish Super Lig club Hatayspor was found in the remains of a luxurious 12-story building where he lived in the city of Antakya, Hatay Province.

“Atu’s corpse was found under the rubble. At this time, his belongings are still being removed,” manager Murat Uzunmemet told private news agency DHA.

The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6 topped 43,000 on Friday and was certain to rise as search teams found more bodies.

The 31-year-old, who has played for Chelsea, Newcastle United, Everton and Bournemouth in the English Premier League, signed for Hataispor from Saudi Arabia late last year.

Hataispor said Atu’s body was being repatriated to Ghana. The club tweeted: “There are no words to express our grief.

The day after the quake, Atu was pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed building and taken to a hospital for treatment, according to reports. However, the club announced days later that Atu and the club’s sporting director Tanel Savut were still missing.

The contractor for the gorgeous 12-story Ronesans Rezidans building where Atsu and Savto lived was detained at Istanbul airport a week ago, apparently about to leave the country.
