Fuel cell project has the potential to reduce electricity bills of 10,000 LIers by 10%

A California company is proposing to install fuel cells in the parking lot of Melville. This will reduce the electricity bills of 10,000 homeowners by a guaranteed 10%, or $ 151 a year.

San Francisco-based Generate Capital Inc. wants to install 28 fuel cells in a 0.5-acre section of the 575 Broad Hollow Rd. This land is part of a large parking lot in a small office building opposite the Long Island Hilton Hotel.

Generate hired Plainview’s Edgewise Energy to build a $ 57 million project and get homeowners across the island to buy 7.6 megawatts of electricity through a subscription plan.

Fuel cells generate energy through a “combustion-free electrochemical process,” so “Long Island residents participating in our project will have access to cheaper, cleaner electricity.” , Said Jeff Ross, head of the Generate investment team.

Fuel cell energy projects need to obtain a building permit from Huntington Town.

The Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency awarded on Thursday to generate a sales tax exemption of up to $ 2 million for the purchase of construction materials and equipment for the project. The company has also agreed to a 25-year property tax agreement that pays an average of $ 307,500 per year, in addition to the $ 6,000 annual tax on parking lots.

The project will not create permanent jobs, but Ross said Generate and its local partner Edgewise will hire 15 union members for construction from August to September.

Edgewise CEO Sammy Chu is a former Labor Commissioner under Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Executive, Vice Chairman of the County Planning Commission, and Chairman of the Long Island Branch of the US Green Building Council. In 2019, Chu lobbied IDA and demanded that tax-reduced businesses disclose the amount of energy they use.

Separately, Generate proposed a fuel cell project at the 1640 Hempstead Tpke. It is located in East Meadow, where the former Lufthansa building is located opposite Eisenhower Park.
